Over the past few decades, the population of the United States, Canada and other industrialized nations has been sitting more and moving less; consequently, the incidence of many chronic conditions to include type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, orthopedic issues, and metabolic syndrome have dramatically increased.
Unfortunately, the rise in chronic disease has been mostly ignored. Not one sector of healthcare is trying to address it. Not physicians, not public or population health departments, not health or educational institutions.
Fitness can be, should be, and is the frontline of healthcare. By educating fitness professionals in chronic disease management, many conditions may be alleviated in the primary care stage, when they can be reversed. We know exercise and activity can help in primary, secondary, or tertiary prevention, and it can positively affect over 30 chronic conditions. In collaboration with clinicians, fitness professionals trained in program design, management, and chronic

About the Author:
Dr. Dan Mikeska, DHSc
Dan is a student of his profession, and for over 20 years, he has offered his experience and extensive education to clients who are serious about achieving results.
Dan’s mission is to improve population health and to increase the quality of life by connecting education, medicine, and fitness. This goal can be achieved by providing an educational pathway for fitness professionals who want to become respected members of the healthcare community, prompting clinicians to prescribe exercise, and encouraging patients to enlist the services of a qualified fitness professional.
Dan’s philosophy centers on the fact that human movement is a complicated and coordinated effort between your muscles, skeleton, and metabolism, and everyone is different. Knowing how each of the systems of the body work, independently and in concert, is essential in the development of an effective fitness program.
In addition to a doctorate degree in Health Science and a master’s degree in Human Movement, Dan has some of the most sought after certifications from The National Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the Cancer Exercise Training Institute, and the Exercise is Medicine credential from the American College of Sports Medicine.
Dan’s education and vast experience have given him the opportunity to work with notable organizations such as Life with Cancer and 2Unstoppable, as well as teach fitness and wellness classes at Northern Virginia Community College. He is on the Medical Advisory Board for the Cancer Exercise Training Institute, and has been a member of the Industry Advisory Council for American Public University’s Sports and Heath Science program. Additionally, he has published numerous papers on the scope of practice for fitness professional, and the need, yet lack of education for clinical exercise.
He is currently adjunct faculty for A.T. Still University’s masters of Kinesiology program and American Public/Military University’s Sports and Health Science program.

FAQS
There are other medical or fitness specialist courses are available. How is this one different?
This program was designed for the Fitness Professional who works in a gym, small training studio, conducts in-home sessions, and may not have access to expensive testing equipment or physician oversight on the property. We feel the chapters are easy to navigate and to the point without any unnecessary information or requirements that can be found in most basic personal training courses. There are tables and charts that provide much of the information in a concise easy to understand format.
Is a college degree or previous certification required?
Some of the other courses require a college degree and some will not accept online degrees. We feel that any amount of knowledge we can get into the hands of the frontline Fitness Professionals will benefit everyone as we improve personal and population health. This course assumes there is a base knowledge of physiology and biomechanics that can be found in most Certified Personal Trainer programs.
What grade do I need to achieve to pass the final exam?
This final exam is comprised of over 125 questions from every chapter in the CXS course. You have an unlimited amount of time to complete the test and must achieve a score of 75% or better. Each chapter also includes a quiz. The quizzes are not graded but will provide guidance as to your understanding of the material. If you do not achieve a passing grade, the exam will be reset one time. If you still fail to achieve a 75% or better on the final exam, you will have to pay to $100 for another 2 attempts
How long do I have to complete the course?
Although you have up to 12 months to complete the entire course, it is recommended you complete at least one section per week.
What is your refund policy?
We certainly understand how quickly everyone’s situation can change, and we want everyone who visits our program to be happy with their experience. Because the textbook is available from the beginning of the course as a pdf download, a refund of all except $100 will be available in the first two weeks. If you are on a payment plan, you will be charged any additional amount.
Will I be considered a clinician after earning the CXS credential?
Clinical Exercise refers to a type of exercise intervention. A clinician is someone who may diagnose, treat, and otherwise care for patients. As Fitness Professionals, we are not licensed by any state or other type of governing board; therefore, we have clients, not patients, and should not be considered clinicians. The materials in the CXS program will give you the knowledge and expertise to become part of a team of providers for a client suffering from one of the more than 30 conditions discussed in the Clinical Exercise Specialist program.
Will I be able to accept insurance after earning the CXS designation?
Insurance is regulated from state to state so it is best to check the laws governing health insurance in your state, and you may have to petition each insurance company separately. I would like to challenge you to ask yourself why you want to take insurance? In a bureaucratic environment when many health care providers are moving away from insurance and into concierge practice, why do Fitness Professionals want to jump into something that so many are trying to get out of?
There are discussion questions at the end of every chapter; why?
The purpose of any course of learning is to convey usable information. The discussion and application questions are designed to prompt you to think about how you will apply what you have learned to your particular situation.
